Medicine for Melancholy

A Kevin Epps event... This was real nice. Screened Medicine for Melancholy, the writer/director Barry Jenkins answered questions after the movie, Then a panel came out to speak about the "Exodus" of African Americans from San Francisco. This ran all the way until they literally had to leave because of time... The audience wanted more and this discussion went extremely well with the movie. I was glad I made it out to see this screening because I almost did not make it.

Big Snopp Dogg at the FILLMORE

SFBFF had a chance to check out Snoop at the FILLMORE. I am always happy to see Snoop keep going. To come from where he did, doing what he did, and making a job out of it. He figured it out and grew up... You do not hear of Snoop doing anything (minus weed) or getting in any trouble anymore. He is just coasting and trying to stay busy (working). Good Job!!! I also like that his niche is just being cool... You can not beat that. Anyway he brought Daz and Kurrupt with him so they could do some of the classics. It was not a bad show and he is definitely a professional... all though he did start on time... he was about fifteen minutes late (wonder why:) -Thank you Greg "Dread"... good looking out

Checking out venues and working on program schedules with funding and marketing simmering on the back burner. We could use some help, but we are moving ahead at full steam and it will come together...Keep SFBFF in your prayers!! and on your tentative calendars.

I was not going here but passed it on my way to the Brava. It had a nice sign that really stuck out... even in the day. It was closed but I could see someone sleeping inside. Not a bum or anything but maybe a worker. I only saw a pillow propped up inside on what looked like a pallet. But this is all an assumption of course. I wanted to check it out but maybe my next visit they will be open or I will make an appointment.

Boom Boom Room

I have been here to see many shows. It was formally "John Lee Hookers" Boom Boom Room. The sound in this place is nice and it has a cool velvet curtain that goes up with the push of a button. It is a smaller venue but could be utilized for something small and personal. It also offers the opportunity for live music -or- a screen on the stage. It has a definite unique feeling to no other place in the city. I will consider this place in the future for a "special" SFBFF event.

M.O.A.D.

I had never been here before but I had heard much about M.O.A.D.. Walking in I noticed that the place was smaller than its name. It just seemed to be larger... It had three floors of exhibits and history dealing with the diaspora of the blacks in America. A needed museum... Although I was there to view the facility, I could not help looking at the displays and visiting the different rooms and seeing what they had to offer. The space in question had a projector that screened on the wall in a moderate size room. The room had enough space to display an exhibit and watch a film with a select audience. I envisioned using it but of course this may be better at a later date. For this time around, I am looking for something else. M.O.A.D. might better suit me for a meet and greet or a small meeting with close friends and constituents. I did like the space but I think I would rather something that has more to offer as far as functionalbility for my vision. M.O.A.D. would take a lot more on my part to make it work. At this point I am looking for a place that can accommodate the whole event in one sitting (place).

FORT MASON (Cowell Theater)

This place I love... This is remarkable! Right off the water. Has that lofty feel and look. The facility is nice and very practical. The theater rental includes labor (union). Plenty of room for displays, Q&A's, bathroom were clean... etc. You gotta love this spot. Just look at the picture...

At the time of my visit, the new lessee's were moving in. The place is lofty and roomy. A really big space with nice windows that really give this spot a nice feel. Who would have thought windows could set the ambiance so easily. They are up and running but there was a conflict with the times and dates I needed. I was told it could be done but with a lot of juggling involved...

Delancey Street Theater

Nice project. Google it (Delancey st. San Francisco) to find out more about the project. It can be a real feel good place. It was too small for what I needed. I will remember them for the years to come. The prices and what was included, the lady who was helping... This is definitely worth keeping in my memory bank for a later date. It is off the water close to the stadium by pier 22. Parking was not bad but if there is a game, logistics would be the killer. But it is very MUNI friendly.

AMC Van Ness

OK... nice place but... way to expensive! I am not sure if the person I talked to was incompetent or what but I was completely turned off. I almost could not believe, or still may not believe the price quoted. With those prices, they may not make it or they did not want my kind there. (I am joking).. I am just saying... ridiculous! BUT... it could be my inexperience. It is a large place and on Van Ness... That's gotta be worth something.

AAACC. This place has been used over the years many times. One of the festivals I went to was here. I came from Atlanta with my son and my cousin. This venue is cool but I have seen it recently and it is under construction. It has potential and with it being remodeled (OPENING 08/09) it seems like a great opportunity. The venue provides everything I could need on site including green room, extra room, display room, ect. I am really curious about this place and hope they get it together so I can consider using it. Being that a solid answer has not been recieved about the renting of AAACC but a light commitment has been given. I can only keep it in the back of my mind for now. We will see in a bout a week if this place is plausible or not.

Herbst Theater

A city owned theater... Needless to say it is extremely nice. This is the old-time theater at its prime. You get the feeling of how this is a place where people of distinction met in the years of old to watch film or a play. Because it is city owned and SFBFF having the 501(c)3 backing ,we could get a sweet deal on this place. Well... what seemed like a sweet deal but really in the long run became about the same as the others. This place is definitely huge. Upstairs, downstairs, balcony, and even box seats. The artwork surrounding the venue is unique. The structure and architecture is that of quality.

It would hard to keep this place filled with what I have planned for this year but I am seriously considering it. Of course if not this year, in the future.

I noticed my mother used this place to do the awards ceremony and it was a perfect fit for that. Because of the structure and its beauty, that is a perfect fit. I give this place high ratings as far a aesthetics...

The Clay

Located on Fillmore Street. I went to this theater because it was close to the house. I had walked by it many times and noticed the movies they played. They were old but never the less, interesting. Anyway, after several attempts, I finally caught them open so I could view the theater. I expected more, so I must admit, I was a little thrown off. I just thought it was bigger for some reason. I thought it had more screens. Not that it is not big enough for me because I believe I could make this work easily. I thought it felt damp, and maintained just enough... just enough to get by. The people who worked there were helpful and kind. I thought there was more space to setup for catering and drinks but that it what it lacked. It is a great theater to handle business with no thrills but to take it up a notch would not be feasible at the CLAY. What I did like was they had an option that allowed you to hook video games to the theater screen and play. I thought that was awesome and had a brief dream about holding a "gamer" day there in the future. Some sort of competition with prizes.

Anyway back on point. The Clay I felt was a little dreary and moist. It might work if it was forced but not this year... not for this event. I am not totally writing it off but from the theaters I have seen this falls lower on the list.

The Castro Theater

The Castro Theater located in San Francisco is very nice (fabulous!). This Theater is large and very well manicured. Walking through the door you can feel the history overwhelm you. The structure, the curves, the roof... a very large balcony and reasonable green room, I loved this place. The only problem being it was booked for those dates I was looking for. The manager was very responsive and a charm. He was a really down to earth guy who was eager to discuss film and its festivals.

After a long conversation over logistics and where we were in getting ready for the SFBFF, I was glad he came to work today. He gave me some really valuable information that he could have kept to himself. I am glad that there are still people whom are willing to help the underdog.
I think I will keep this place in my memory bank for a later date. I will definitely return back to check out a film or two.

If continuing the San Francisco Black Film Festival in my mother's name can turn into an exercise of pulling teeth, I can only imagine the obstacles she overcame get started 11 years ago...I knew she had a vision and stayed busy, but I HAD NO IDEA. It's been six months and I still can't believe she is gone...compelled to hold on, I have no choice but to try and keep her dream alive. San Francisco has been asking for the festival that they have come to enjoy as a staple in the arts community over the years and I am going to continue to give it to them...
